Where oh Where Has My Audience Gone?

As far as television viewing goes, the season-ending numbers show that Canada is as much a one-party state as Albania was under Enver Hoxha. On Monday I received an email with the final ratings and they are worthy of taking a look at. Here are the key demographic groups:

Demo
CTV Top 20
Global Top 20

2+
7 of 10; 14 of 20
3 of 10; 5 of 20
A25-54
8 of 10; 14 of 20
2 of 10; 5 of 20
A18-49
7 of 10; 13 of 20
3 of 10; 6 of 20

Now you might notice that 14 plus 5 does not equal 20. There is one lone show not seen on either CTV or Global among Canada's favourite twenty programs. Can you guess what it is? (Can you guess where it is? You may have forgotten CBC exists. Clearly most Canadians have.) Here is the full Top 20 Shows:

Ah yes, there it is. Hockey Night in Canada down in nineteenth place. This is not a good sign for CBC. Do recall that these numbers measure like against like. In other words, these are the ratings generated by over-the-air, which still exists, along with basic cable and satellite. These are three national broadcast networks competing for the same pool of viewers accessing the same medium - on-line downloads or Tivo-like devices not included. With the nut of all that meaning that an entire network cannot either produce or buy a single show that captures the public imagination. My but the Tories are doing a lovely job of destroying CBC.

(A short, digressive fantasy: Deep within the Diefenbunker  there sits a stooped figure under a throw blanket stroking an ugly cat. It is Stephen Harper. His withered hand pauses the remote control, then reaches for his cell phone. He speed dials the number 7 then speaks. His voice rattles like a bad road. 'This is Harper. I saw the new pilot. Terrible. Tell CBC to buy it immediately.' Click.)

The again, let's take a quick look at that list again. You know, I don't see any home produced programming at all. Unless you count Hockey Night in Canada and I don't. What a depressing sight that is. We as a nation don't like anything - anything - that our media companies are producing for Canadian television. There are only two conclusions possible. Either the media arts community hasn't got a larking clue what the public likes, or the network buyers are as ignorant on the topic as a tree frog is of thermal dynamics.

I've often wondered why pilot screenings are so secretive. The Marx Brothers, in their MGM days, would do a road show and try out bits of their upcoming movies to fine-tune the jokes. Why wouldn't a broadcaster like CBC try the same? Rent some lecture theatres, open the doors and pass the comment cards. Or put the pilots up on-line and let the viewers vote. Clearly such a system couldn't do a worse job than whatever testing is presently used.

Last quick word. A personal shout out and a wish for a long and happy life to an old pal and a Constant Reader. Mike, I wish you and Reanna a wonderful wedding. I spoke to God and He'll grant you good weather for tomorrow. The bad news is, God wants to invite some friends along. Be seeing you!
